Sandustry Water Guide: Flow, Sources, and the Gold Loop
How water works in Sandustry, where to find it, how it flows and reacts with Fire and Snow, the Wet Sand to Gold loop, and infinite water from Lumlings.

Water is the resource your Sandustry factory will never stop asking for. It wets Sand and Seeds. The Shaker line that produces Gold depends on it, and so do Snowmakers. An efficient base needs large volumes, so this sandustry water guide starts with sources and flow rules, then covers two ways to keep water flowing forever: the Steam-rain cycle and captured Lumlings.
What Water Is
The official material data is short but worth internalizing, because every interaction below shapes factory design:

Water combines with Snow to form Ice, and with Fire to form Steam. Those two reactions are reversible through processing, which is what makes closed water loops possible at all.
How Water Moves
Liquids flow downhill and settle into any depression. On flat ground, individual pixels skitter back and forth until they find somewhere to drop, so nothing is ever truly stuck, just slow.
Flow is blocked by most buildings that would also block a non-hovering player, which means you can contain and direct water with ordinary factory infrastructure such as Blocks and Conveyor Belts. Standard Filters let water pass, while Advanced Filters can be set to block or pass it as needed.
Two quirks catch new players off guard:
- Water can slip through where two corners of blocks meet, if no other block stops it. Seal diagonal gaps when a pool must stay put.
- A droplet that finds no depression within 45 seconds evaporates. The water is not lost — it enters a rain buffer and may fall from the sky later, and all water eventually settles into flat-surfaced pools.
You can pick water up and move it with the Grabber, but only after buying the Hydro Sponge upgrade. And note the edge case with cold: a small volume of water touching Snow makes the Snow disappear instead of forming Ice, so tiny amounts sabotage your own Ice production.
Where Water Comes From
Natural sources, especially early on:
- Surface lakes and underground water deposits.
- Melting Ice.
- Rain, produced when Steam reaches the sky. Pair the Cryoblaster (making Snow) with melting into Steam and the same water keeps raining back down.

From Water to Gold
Water's chemistry is the engine of the early economy:
- 1 Sand pixel + 1 Water pixel become 2 Wet Sand.
- 1 Seed pixel + 1 Water pixel leave you with 1 Wet Seed (the water is absorbed).
- Snowmakers also drink a steady supply.
The Gold loop runs through it: Water turns Dirt into Wet Sand. That Wet Sand feeds the Shaker, which filters Gold into a collector below. Water also connects to the rest of the state chart: a Flamethrower melts Ice back into water and boils water into Steam, and Steam floats until it hits the sky and returns as rain. Outside the Gold loop, mixing a Spore with Water is the first step of growing Flowers.
A basic water-to-Gold setup from a lake:
To scale up on a big lake, build the Launcher vertically so it reaches the bottom, keep the Shaker line and collectors, stretch the belt out, and add a Kinetic Press at the far end. Burn the Shaker residue on the belt before it reaches the Press for a second round of Gold; a Thermal Buffer on the belt does that automatically.

Infinite Water from Lumlings
Lumlings are small critters found while exploring, and they shed water just by existing. That makes them the low-maintenance option among renewable sources.
The path to a Lumling farm:
- Research the Coraler to capture Lumlings and haul them back to base.
- Build a Critter Fence to pen them near the water system.
- Let them release water on their own, then move it with a Pump and Pipe pair.
In tposegaming author Ethan Parker's Sandustry #3 playthrough, three captured Lumlings were described as essentially infinite water. Two design constraints decide whether your pen works:
- Lumlings only release water while above the waterline. A fence that lets them sink into the pooled water defeats the setup.
- A Pump will not drip water any higher than its own position, so plan Pipe routes with that ceiling in mind.
When the factory outgrows production anyway, a Condenser filled with Snow works as a stopgap. It buys water on the spot without redoing the Pipe network, though it will not replace a proper Lumling farm.

Common Problems and Fixes
- Residue sometimes doesn't burn fully and piles up inside the Kinetic Press. Check the setup regularly, especially after scaling up.
- A Launcher can stall if Wet Sand isn't landing right at its base.
- Running out of water remains common even with a Lumling setup once the factory outgrows water production. Fix the ratio rather than rebuilding the whole network.
