Flow follows three rules worth memorizing. First, liquids run downhill and settle into any depression, so dig reservoirs below your production floor. Second, most buildings that block a non-hovering player also block water, which means Belts and factory walls double as water pipes. Third, water cannot flow through solid blocks but slips through the gap where two block corners meet if nothing else seals it — the classic source of mystery leaks. A droplet that finds no depression within 45 seconds evaporates, and evaporated water enters a rain buffer that can fall back from the sky later; all water eventually settles into flat-surfaced pools.
The Wet Sand to Gold Loop
The core economy is simple: Dirt plus Water makes Wet Sand, Wet Sand feeds the Shaker, and the Shaker filters Gold into a collector underneath. An early setup comes together in four steps:
- Find a lake or pond and place a Launcher at its edge.
- Connect the Launcher output to a row of Shakers.
- Put a collector box under each Shaker and run a Belt off the side to clear leftover residue.
- Dig Dirt and toss it toward the Launcher. The Dirt gets wet on the way down, the Launcher flings Wet Sand into the Shakers, and Gold lands in the collectors.
Scaling up is mostly vertical. Build the Launcher upward so it reaches the bottom of a deep lake, keep the Shaker line and collectors, stretch the Belt to a Kinetic Press at the far end, and burn the Shaker residue on the Belt before it arrives — residue burns into a second round of Gold, and a Thermal Buffer automates that burn. Check the Press regularly once production grows, because unburned residue piles up inside it.
Sustainable Sources: Rain Cycle and Lumlings
Lakes look infinite early on, but a growing factory can outpace them. There are two durable answers.
The Steam rain cycle exploits evaporation. A Flamethrower or any fire source boils water into Steam, Steam rises until it hits the sky, and it falls back down as rain. Pair the cycle with a Cryoblaster that makes Snow for your ice and cooling needs, and the loop effectively prints water from heat.
Lumlings are the community favorite. These small critters shed water just by existing, so penning them near your water system is a passive spring. Research the Coraler, capture a few during exploration, and build a Critter Fence around them.

Two placement rules decide whether the pen works. Lumlings only release water while they sit above the waterline, so a fence that lets them sink into the pool shuts the spring off. And a Pump never lifts water higher than its own body, so plan Pipe routes with that ceiling in mind. In one playthrough the author described three captured Lumlings as essentially infinite water, though that is observation rather than an official number.
Common Problems and Quick Fixes
- Residue piling up in the Kinetic Press means the Belt burn step is not keeping pace; add a Thermal Buffer or slow the feed.
- A Launcher stalls when Wet Sand is not landing at its base; check the throw arc and clear debris.
- When demand outgrows even a Lumling pen and a Pump cannot reach the target, a Condenser filled with Snow is a stopgap — it won't replace a proper Lumling farm, but it buys water on the spot without redoing the Pipe network.
